11/30/2006 4:00:00 AM Bright Angel Lodge closing for renovation of cabins, guest rooms
Xanterra South Rim LLC plans a $2 million renovation on the cabins and guest rooms of the Bright Angel Lodge from Jan. 2-April 30.
The Bright Angel Lodge overnight accommodations will be closed, but the main building the Bright Angel Restaurant, Coffee Shop, History Room, front desk, transportation desk and gift shop will remain open.
The Arizona Room restaurant will shut down in January and February for its typical seasonal closure.
Improvements will include the replacement of the boardwalk adjacent to the rim cabins, adding piping to allow for future installation of gas log sets in four fireplace cabins to replace existing wood-burning fireplaces and extensive upgrades to the interiors of the cabins.
These include refinishing existing claw tubs and installing new bathroom tubs, toilets, sinks, faucets and hardware as well as new floor and wall tile in the cabin and shared bathrooms. The corridor and guest cabin carpet will be replaced along with cabin drapes and bedspreads.
Xanterra will also purchase and install new mattresses, refinish existing furniture, purchase new furniture and install new guest cabin lighting. The interior walls and ceilings will be repainted.
The Bright Angel Lodge was designed in 1935 by famed architect Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter. It is the registration point for 50 cabins, 39 lodge rooms and Thunderbird Lodge.
