Tusayan's newest attraction hosts local appreciation day

Ever wanted to play a game of poker like they did in the Wild West? Those who attend an Aug. 25 mixer at the Western Discovery Museum will get to do just that as the Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce hosts a ‘western-themed poker night’ beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Ever wanted to play a game of poker like they did in the Wild West? Those who attend an Aug. 25 mixer at the Western Discovery Museum will get to do just that as the Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce hosts a ‘western-themed poker night’ beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Residents in and around the Tusayan area will get a chance to visit the Western Discovery Museum free of charge Aug. 23 when officials host a locals appreciation day designed to bring the community to the town's newest attraction.

Birth: Benjamin Wellstone Berger
Grand Canyon residents Todd and Bonnie Berger welcomed their son, Benjamin Wellstone Berger, into the world at 8:08 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, in Flagstaff, Ariz. He weighed seven pounds and was 18.5 inches long. Proud grandparents are Vincent Platt, Carolyn Naymatsu and Suzaenne Platt of Minnesota; Midge and Don Harris of Madison, Wisc.; and Richard Berger of Ellijay, Ga.

Vessey graduates basic training
Air Force Airman Steven M. Vessey has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Michael Vessey of Grand Canyon. Vessey is a 2006 graduate of Grand Canyon High School.

Coffey joins Operation Fredom
US Army PFC Jason Coffey deployed this month in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is currently a CH-47 Chinook helicopter mechanic and a trained helicopter door gunner. Coffey is attached to the 3-10 General Support Aviation Battalion, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y. Coffey attended Grand Canyon schools and was a resident of Grand Canyon until joining the Army in February 2007. He is the son of former Grand Canyon residents Jim and Lisa Coffey.
