WHS gridders begin practicing next week
By Brad Fuqua, WGCN sports editor
The Williams High School football team opens practice on Aug. 9 at Viking Stadium, head coach Rick Shipley announced.
Any players interested in participating on the team this year are asked to bring completed physical forms, health insurance forms and other proper paperwork to practice. Students can pick up paperwork from the WHS front office.
Williams Clinic is offering special prices for physicals for any Viking athletes — volleyball players and middle-school athletes too.
Athletes can make appointments at the clinic by calling 635-4441.
Coach Ken Edes said volleyball practice would begin on Aug. 16.
The football team open the season on Sept. 1 at Tuba City. The Vikings will tune up for the season-opener with a home scrimmage vs. Joseph City on Aug. 25.
After the Tuba City game, the team will play at Blue Ridge on Sept. 8 before hosting Laughlin-Nev., on Sept. 15.
The nonconference scheduled ends Sept. 22 at home vs. Needles-Calif., which will be homecoming.
Class 2A Canyon Region play opens Sept. 29 with a game at Heber vs. Mogollon. The Vikings will then host Orme on Oct. 6 and Sedona Red Rock on Oct. 13.
The Vikings finish up with road games at Mayer on Oct. 21 and Salome on Oct. 27. The playoffs are slated to begin Nov. 3. There will be three playoff representatives out of the Canyon Region this year.
The junior-varsity football schedule opens Sept. 12 at home vs. Salome. Other JV dates will be Sept. 19 at Joseph City, Sept. 26 vs. Mogollon, Oct. 3 vs. Orme, Oct. 10 at Sedona Red Rock and Oct. 17 vs. Mayer.
The WHS volleyball schedule has not yet been obtained for publication.
