Ash Fork youngster donates to Make-A Wish Fund
Ashley Duncan, a 10-year-old Ash Fork School student who won a $500 Yavapai County School District essay contest recently, donated half of her prize money to Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Arizona.
Ashley was nominated for the prize by her fourth-grade teacher, Suzy Phillips, at Ash Fork Joint United School District No. 31. The subject of the essay was how each student would spend the $500 if they were to win the essay contest.
Ashley said she would donate $250 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® and put the other $250 in her savings account for college.
Ashley is involved in the Elementary Newspaper at school where she writes a cooking column. She is also the first vice president of the Elementary Student Council. Her responsibilities include arranging a lunch each month for students with perfect attendance.
Kim Johanson, executive director of Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Arizona, said the donation made by Ashley will help fund the wish of a child with a life threatening medical condition who lives in the northern Arizona area.
“It’s wonderful to see children helping children,” Johanson said. “Ashley is indeed a very special youngster.”
Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Arizona covers Apache, Coconino, Mohave, Navajo and Yavapai counties, and is responsible for granting wishes to seriously ill children under the age of 18 years.
