Cards just one game back in standings

The Grand Canyon Cardinals improved to 6-3 on the season with a 16-9 victory over the Williams Tigers early last week.

The Cards now sit in second place one game behind the Seligman Indians, which lost for the first time this season on Thursday to the Ash Fork Devil Rays.

The Parks Pirates are also in the race, 1 1/2 games back.

In the win over the Tigers, Jesse Hunter got the start at pitcher and he went the distance. The Cards got off to a rough start as the Tigers scored five runs in the top of the first inning.

Grand Canyon came back with two runs. Ryne Boone was hit by a pitch and scored on a triple by David Robinson, who later scored on a triple by Christopher Streit. However, Streit was stranded.

The Tigers went up 6-2 in the top of the second only to see the Cards come back again. Tyler Ottosen, Casey Gibson, Hunter, Boone, Streit and Eddie Tobin all scored in the bottom of the second. Hunter had a home run.

After the Tigers scored two more runs to stay within striking distance, the Cards put the game away with seven in the third. Hunter hit another home run, as did Boone. Ottosen, Robinson, Streit and Scott Olsen also had hits in the inning. They all scored, along with Tobin, who reached base on a walk.

Grand Canyon added another run in the fifth when Tobin singled and came around to score.

The Cards’ next game will be today vs. the Ash Fork Devil Rays.
