WHS honors top athletes from past year
Williams High School coaches honored its top athletes last week with a sports banquet.
Coaches handed out team awards, letters and reviewed their particular seasons for the large crowd on hand.
Connie Stevens got things started with her volleyball awards. Ali Erickson and Dana Glasscock, both first-team all-region players, had the rare honor of sharing the most valuable player award.
“We had an excellent season for being as young as we were,” Stevens said. “We were only one game out of qualifying for the state tournament.”
In football, Rick Shipley handed out the MVP to Juan Alvarado, who was also first-team all-region along with Fred Garcia, Mark Chamberlin and Daniel Greene.
“Looking back, we had some good wins,” Shipley said. “We did have a few losses we’d like to forget about.”
Dave Green’s awards followed for boys basketball. The Vikings’ MVP award went to Mario Orozco.
“We had a lot of close ballgames,” Green said. “But we had a lot of overtimes and close losses.”
Lorenzo Rodriguez revealed the girls basketball MVP as Lyssa Mulvihill, a big honor for a freshman player.
“Our season started slow ... but as the season progressed, the junior and sophomores got more confidence in themselves and that started to show.”
Ken Edes took a few minutes to pay tribute to Karen Matthews, a student who was killed in a car-train accident. The girls dedicated the season to Matthews and at the banquet, present her mother with a signed basketball.
In cheer, Andrea Hunt presented the MVP award to Leah Pixley.
Day Ayub’s track MVP’s went to Diane Krupski for the girls and Jeff Todd for the boys.
In baseball, Johnny Hatcher presented the MVP award to Fred Garcia. Five Viking players made the all-region team.
Ann Wells’ softball team had six on the all-region team and the Lady Vikings’ MVP award went to Dee Dee Fogg, another freshman.
Shipley ended things with golf, which was in its first year. Brandon Evans won the MVP. It was the third freshman MVP of the night, probably a first for the school.
