Fourth of July plans include parade, BBQ<br>
The Fourth of July tradition at Grand Canyon will continue this year with the annual parade and community barbecue in Tusayan and will feature something new with Grand Canyon Music Festival’s millennium event.
There will be a full day of festivities on the Fourth of July, beginning at noon with the parade down State Route 64.
“I think the parade will be a lot of fun,” the Chamber’s Don Keil said. “It begins at 12 noon and we’ll go through Tusayan, turn around and then come back.”
Parade entries are accepted up until the last minute. It will lineup at the north end of Long Jim Canyon Road, just south of Moqui Lodge between 11 and 11:30 a.m.
Volunteers firefighters from the Tusayan Fire Department will be this year’s grand marshals. Fire chief Robbie Evans and his paid staff will also take part in the parade.
After its first pass through Tusayan, the parade will turn around at Grand Canyon Squire Inn for a second look.
Following the parade, there will be a barbecue at the Moqui Lodge cookout site. It officially begins with the National Anthem.
The Miss Gypsy Blue band will provide music until 5 p.m. There will also be the annual auction, which helps raise money for the community’s benefit and the chamber of commerce’s activities. Auctioneer Ron Clayton will again lead that effort.
The chamber is seeking items to be donated for the auction. To help, drop off your donated items at Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters. For more information, call Wendy Greer at 638-9330.
On the evening of the Fourth, there will be no fireworks at Valle this year because of the dry conditions and fire restrictions imposed on unincorporated areas by the county board of supervisors.
Linda Speckels, who owns Flintstones Bedrock Citym where the show has been held in the past, said the Valle-Wood Volunteer Fire Department and the rest of the community will instead have a Labor Day celebration this year.
There will also be a special performance by Grand Canyon Music Festival as part of the Continental Harmony millennium event.
Brent Michael Davids will present “Guardians of the Grand Canyon” at 7:30 p.m. on the Fourth of July at the Shrine of the Ages.
