GCNP — The Grand Canyon High School soccer team fell to 1-4 in the region, 3-7 overall after losses to Show Low and Chino Valley last week.
The Phantoms fell in nonconference action to Show Low on Friday by an 8-0 count. The team then lost to Chino Valley in the region on Saturday, 9-1.
“We should’ve done better than that,” Phantoms coach Ken Olsen said. “We just got off our gameplan. We didn’t have that extra get up and go.”
Olsen said the team has been suffering the past few weeks from the flu bug. Some of the top names on the team were dragging from being sick.
In the loss to Chino Valley, Grand Canyon’s lone goal came in the middle of the second half on a penalty kick by Ryan Maloney.
“We’re not playing as good as we did the first part of the year,” Olsen said. “The season’s now half over. To go to state, we have to beat Pinon and Ash Fork.”
The Phantoms will host Oak Creek Ranch Friday in another match outside the conference. Then Grand Canyon finds itself in a must-win situation at Pinon on Saturday.
In junior-varsity action, Chino Valley beat Grand Canyon, 4-1. Carlos Padilla had the goal for the Phantoms. Show Low beat Grand Canyon, 3-2. Goals from that game were not available.
The Phantoms will host their annual bonfire Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. on the school’s baseball field. Olsen and the players invite the community out to the special pep rally, which takes place on a Thursday.
