GC spikers rally to sweep<br>two from Music Mountain

GCNP — The Grand Canyon High School volleyball team finished the regular season Thursday with two victories over Music Mountain, giving head coach Matt Yost his first-ever winning season.

The Lady Phantoms ended up with a 15-11 overall and just as impressively, went 6-6 in the Class 1A North Region.

“I’m pretty happy with that,” Yost said. “It was a good set of games to end the season on.”

Music Mountain, not yet an official member of the region, got out to early leads on both of Thursdays matches only to see Grand Canyon rally.

The Lady Phantoms won the matches, 13-15, 15-0, 15-1 and 8-15, 15-0, 15-13.

“When it got tough, they decided to play harder, which is cool to see,” Yost said. “With no subs ... I think they all realize they need to play well. They have no choice.”

Music Mountain shot out to leads of 5-0 and 14-5 in the first game of the first match. The Phantoms did rally with eight straight points to pull to within 14-13, but then the opponent finally got the winning point.

In the second game, Grand Canyon couldn’t be touched and won easily, 15-0. They then 15-1 in the third game. In a stretch from late in the first game through the third game, Grand Canyon outscored Music Mountain, 38-2.

“Erin (Wahler) came through for me big time with great serves and great hits,” Yost said. “Melissa Haufle had great blocks that the team rallied around. Megan (Boyd) gave me a strong performance with great serves and she really covered well. She helped keep the ball alive for us.”

Yost also said Kara and Cally Foo were both instrumental in giving their teammates great sets to capitalize on. And Michele Mickelson had an exceptional day with her serves and digs.

Grand Canyon will open regionals Friday at 10 a.m. vs. Fredonia in matches played at Seligman. With a win, the Phantoms would play again at 1 p.m. vs. Joseph City.

In last week’s story, the team was incorrectly reported as losing to Sedona junior varsity. The Phantoms did sweep those matches.
