The Williams Steelers finished off the regular season Saturday with a 28-0 victory over the Big Bug Rangers to advance to the divisional championship game.
The Steelers will take on the Bagdad Sun Devils Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Prescott High School field.
Williams wasted no time in putting away the Rangers on Saturday. The Steelers took the opening kickoff and got great field position near midfield when Vince Alvarado had a 25-yard kickoff return.
Six plays later, Alvarado was in the end zone after a two-yard run. Chance Grantham, returning from an elbow injury, had runs of 19 and nine yards in the drive and Alvarado had a 17-yard run on a third-and-one.
Alex Ruiz caught the two-point conversion pass from Matthew Dent for an 8-0 lead at the 7:10 mark.
Big Bug was held three and out and the Steelers got the ball right back. On the second play, Grantham broke free on a 53-yard TD run and the team led 14-0.
The Rangers didn’t have much luck on the next drive either. On the third play, Ruiz recovered a fumble and Williams had the ball again. This time, the Steelers used the clock and scored on a three-yard run by Jonathan Montoya to cap a nine-play, 54-yard drive. Brent Sutton’s two-point conversion run made it 22-0.
The Steelers added another TD in the fourth quarter on a 19-yard run by Montoya. Williams kneeled on the ball in a couple of other drives in the spirit of sportsmanship.
The Steelers defense held the opponent to minus-18 yards rushing and just 15 total yards. Grantham ended up with 121 yards rushing on just seven carries.
Coach Grantham commended the play of Ruiz, Nick Pettit, Bobby Pruett and Casey Pentecost. In particular, Grantham said Ruiz has played well for him all season, lining up at defensive end, tight end and fullback.
Bengals massacre
Marauders, 26-6
The Williams Bengals scored on their first four possessions and whipped the Cottonwood Maraud-ers, 26-6.
Steven Magana scored on a 25-yard counterplay in the first quarter and with Joel Montoya’s two-point conversion, it was quickly 8-0.
Montoya capped an eight-play drive with a one-yard TD run later in the quarter and then scored on a four-yard run at the 6:53 mark of the second quarter. Both two-point conversion attempts failed.
The team’s final TD came on a 14-yard run by Trevor Parenteau for a 26-0 Bengals lead with 43 seconds left in the first half.
The Marauders scored a TD late in the fourth quarter to account for the final margin.
“We just kind of pounded them up the middle,” Bengals coach Bud Parenteau Jr. said. “We wore them down.”
The Bengals will play Saturday at 3:30 p.m. vs. the Prescott Bobcats in a game at Prescott High School’s field. The game will follow the Steelers playoff game.
