Support annual fiesta
As usual the Mexican Fiesta Committee has lined up festivities for this year’s coronation of Mexican royalty
The fiesta will be held Saturday at the Williams Rodeo Barn. Activities and entertainment have been planned to celebrate both Mexico’s independence from Spain and the two young ladies who will be crowned as Mexican royalty for selling raffle tickets to fund Williams community service projects.
Maria Salazar will be Mexican Fiesta Queen and Beatrice Rodriguez will be Princess.
Sept. 16 is Mexican Indepen-dence Day. Williams’ Mexican Fiesta is always held on a Saturday close to the holiday, but this year the two events coincide.
This year’s fiesta is chaired by Bobbie Michelena and Lupe Pacheco, who said they want to invite the entire community to attend the celebration.
Events kickoff at noon with the Tardeada, which is an afternoon fiesta. There will be plenty Mexican food on sale, games and door prizes on hand until 3 p.m.
The coronation of Princess and Queen is at 10 p.m., followed by the drawing for the raffle winners.
The dance will be 9 p.m.-1 a.m. with music provided by Podeo Latino from Sedona. Dance tickets cost $15 per person and $20 per couple.
Proceeds from the fiesta and the raffle sales fund high school scholarships as well as Williams School District and community service projects. The Mexican Fiesta Committee has been providing scholarships for the past 21 years. In May, two Williams High School graduates got $500 apiece. But Michelena said in some years as many as seven scholarships have been funded by the committee.
On top of that, for the last six years the committee has raised additional funds to support teacher, school and community projects.
"We fund field trips and special projects," Michelena said. "In the past we’ve purchased calculators and contributed $1,000 toward band uniforms."
"We also give out Christmas goodie bags at Head Start, to preschoolers and school children in first- through fifth-grade."
She said in past year’s each bag was delivered by an elf and contained candy, cookies, an orange, tangerine and apple.
"Everything we raise goes back to the school and community," Michelena said.
Raffle tickets are still on sale and cost $1 apiece. In addition to one grand prize winner who will receive $500, there will be three ticket holders who get $200 apiece.
