Senior Minors take 2 victories<br>but are eliminated by Prescott

The Williams Senior Minors all-star baseball team went 2-2 in last week’s district tournament.

The team was eliminated from the tournament Saturday by Prescott, 14-4. Coach Wade Pratt said the team did well but had problems with errors in the losses.

“The two that we we won were good but in the other too we had errors,” Pratt said. “We had a bunch of errors in the game against Prescott. Plus I think we ran out of gas. We played 27 games in two months.”

The team, made up of Williams Devil Rays and Grand Canyon Cardinals all-stars, opened the tourney on Wednesday with an 8-6 win over Verde Valley.

Verde Valley led 6-4 heading into the sixth inning but Williams came up with four runs in that frame and then held on in the seventh for the win.

Juan Delgadillo started at pitcher and went into the fourth inning. He allowed four walks, eight hits and six runs while striking out two.

Jake Pratt relieved and went the rest of the way, allowing no runs, three hits and three walks with one strikeout. Pratt was credited with the win.

At the plate, Tempy Walker led the way with a 3-for-3 effort while Delgadillo was 3-for-4. Other top hitters were John Kennelly (2-for-4), Jon Garcia (2-for-4), Miles Hunter (2-for-4), Chance Grantham (1-for-2) and Matthew Dent (1-for-1).

In the sixth, Williams batted through the lineup. Kennelly, Delgadillo and Garcia had key hits to put the team ahead.

Williams squandered away opportunities early on by leaving the bases loaded in both the first and third innings.

The win put Williams into a Thursday contest vs. Prescott Valley. This time, there would be no comeback in an 11-4 loss.

Prescott Valley scored three runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings and shutout Williams after the third to get the win.

Garcia and Ryan Barnes pitched in the game. Garcia went into the fifth, allowing eight hits and four walks while striking out five. Barnes allowed one hit and one walk and fanned one.

Barnes was the top hitter with a 3-for-3 performance. Delgadillo went 2-for-3 while both Kennelly and Mariano Zabala each went 1-for-2.

Williams dropped down into the loser’s bracket to face Sedona on Friday. The game was close for only two innings before Williams took a 13-3 victory. The game was called with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the fifth.

“They played good ball that day,” Pratt said of his team’s effort. “We had only one error that game.”

Sedona took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the third when Williams erupted for five runs. Williams added four runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth when it was ended early on the mercy rule.

Jake Pratt went the distance at pitcher and got his second win of the tournament. He tossed a three-hitter, allowed three walks and struck out one.

Hunter had a 3-for-3 performance at the plate for Williams. Grantham, Delgadillo, Barnes, Pratt and Zabala each had two hits. Kennelly and Joey Sidoti each went 1-for-2.

Williams was eliminated Saturday with the 14-4 loss to Prescott. Prescott exploded for six runs in the second inning and Williams could never recover.

Delgadillo, Barnes, Sidoti and Kennelly all saw action on the mound. Combined, those pitchers allowed 11 hits, six walks and struck out eight.

Offensively, Delgadillo went 3-for-3, Kennelly was 2-for-2 and Pratt was 1-for-2.

Coach Pratt was impressed with the season. Including tournament games, the team went 23-4 for the season.

The all-stars included players from Grand Canyon, which went 9-9 this past season.
