GCNP — Grand Canyon High School celebrated homecoming with various activities last week, capped with the big dance Saturday night.

During the week, students and staff dressed up in relation to the day’s special theme.

The court included, from left, sophomores Ryan Maloney (prince) and Sarah Meredith (princess), juniors Michele Mickelson (duchess) and Alfred Alarcon (duke), freshmen Amy Northup (countess) and Chris Mickelson (count) and seniors Jose Diaz-Gonzalez (king) and Erin Wahler (queen). The student body later participated in the annual homecoming dance, staged this year at the Arizona Steakhouse on the South Rim. The Senior Class was announced as the winner of the homecoming decorating contest. Each class decorated medieval-themed displays.

There was Pajama Day, followed by Western Wear Day, 70s Day and Red and White Day.

Students also had daily homecoming activity periods. On Thursday, each high school class got together in the gymnasium to eat pizza and work on decorations. The decorations revolved around the a medieval theme.

The senior class took first place in the decorating competition with its impressive-looking castle in the southeast corner of the gym.

The Phantom girls and boys basketball teams both dropped their games to tough St. Michael squads. In between the games, principal Ray Vernon announced the homecoming court.

From the freshmen class, Chris Mickelson and Amy Northup were named count and countess, respectively. Sophomores Alfred Alarcon and Michele Mickelson were named duke and duchess.

Juniors Ryan Maloney and Sarah Meredith garnered the prince and princess titles. And seniors Jose Diaz-Gonzalez and Erin Wahler were all smiles after being named king and queen.

After the boys game, students proceeded to the Arizona Steakhouse for the homecoming dance. All activities went on as scheduled despite all of the snow falling outside.

In a side note, 1997 Grand Canyon High School graduate Fredrick “Ed” Tisi, who was killed Dec. 16 in a car accident, was honored at halftime of the boys game. The school retired Tisi’s No. 40, which he wore during his basketball career.
