GC’s AYSO soccer<br>season under way
GC VILLAGE — Grand Canyon's American Youth Soccer Organization season kicked off last week with several games in the village.
Grand Canyon's Under 14 boys team won its season opener with a 4-1 triumph over the Flagstaff Stop Signs. Grand Canyon scored first when Matthew Beckerleg found the net. Later in the half, Beckerleg scored another goal for a 2-0 lead.

In the third quarter, the Stop Signs came back with a goal to cut the deficit in half. But Grand Canyon came right back on goals by Eddie Tobin and Ryne Boone to get the win.
The team headed into the first weekend of action with only two practices.
In other action, the Under 12 boys were shutout by the Flagstaff Gladiators. The visitors displayed everything needed to come out victorious and featured three exceptional athletes on its roster. Grand Canyon has a coed team in the boys division.
Grand Canyon's Under 10 Boys team, with 9 of the 13 players being girls, played well despite a 3-0 loss to their all-boy Flagstaff counterparts, the Blue Blasters.
The game was scoreless into the second half with both teams played excellent defense. Flagstaff took a 1-0 lead and then padded the score with two late goals to the final margin.
Kesley Foster was a standout for Grand Canyon with her aggressive play on defense. Shannon Harris did well in the forward line. Zane Smith did well at goalie in the first half with no goals allowed.
In Under 8 boys action, the Grand Canyon White Wolves took a 2-1 win over Flagstaff. Luke Streit and Shawn Harris scored goals in the first half for a 2-0 lead. The team then held on in the second half.
The other Under 8 team dropped a 3-0 decision.
In Under 6 Girls action, the Grand Canyon team coached by Jessica Olsen won by a 3-1 count. Kayley Wadsworth, Danielle Shanks and Kaitlyn Salas each scored goals.
