Air display set

for this weekend

VALLE — The High Country Warbirds Air Display at the Air Museum Planes of Fame in Valle will be this coming weekend. The event, in its fourth year, will be at the Valle-Grand Canyon Airport and the museum on Saturday and Sunday.

Features activities over the weekend will be warbird and classic aircraft fly-bys and displays, with warbird backseat flights also being available to the public. Both days kick off with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Valle-Wood Volunteer Fire Department (7-10 a.m.) and radio control model aircraft demonstrations by the Mountain Radio Club.

Among the planes flying in for the event will be three historic military aircraft, including a B-25 bomber, recently used in the production of the movie, “Pearl Harbor.” The museum’s new hanger will also be open for viewing.

Various types of exhibits will also be on display and vendors will be on hand with a variety of aviation memorabilia. Food and drink booths will also be open.

Gates for the High Country Warbirds Air Display will open at 9 a.m. with continuous activities both days over the weekend. Admission will be $8 for adults, $2 for youngsters 11 and under and free for accompanied children under 5.

Fourth of July

events organized

TUSAYAN — The Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce announced this week's schedule of events for the Fourth of July celebration in Tusayan.

The parade will line up on Long Jim Canyon Road between Moqui Lodge and IMAX Theater at 11 a.m. for bicycle entries, float entries and live animals.

The barbecue this year has been moved to the Tusayan Fire Station and will begin at 1 p.m. Hamburgers, barbecue beans, tortilla chips, salsa and beverages will be available.

Ron Clayton will auction off items at 2 p.m., and there will be entertainment during the afternoon by the Blue Moon Band.

A new event this year will be "Best Decorated Bike" in the parade. Participants must be between the ages of 5 and 15 and they must ride their bike in the parade. The winner, which will be announced at 2 p.m., will receive a new bike.

The chamber is seeking items to be donated for the auction. They can be dropped off at the Grand Canyon Quality Inn and Suites by July 1. Sunset Supper

set for Thursday

GC VILLAGE — It’s time to get together for fun, food and prizes at the Grand Canyon Rotary Club’s Sunset Supper 2001. The event will be Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the Moqui Lodge cookout area.

Proceeds from the Rotary Club’s event will be used for various community projects.

Those wishing to attend can purchase tickets from any Rotary Club member. Dinner tickets purchased in advance are $10 for a steak or chicken dinner and $5 for a hamburger or veggie burger dinner. Tickets purchased at the door are $12 for the steak or chicken and $6 for the hamburger or veggie burger. Dinner tickets include one soft drink, salads, cowboy beans and dessert.

Raffle tickets can also be purchased for a chance to win scores of various valuable prizes. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5. They are available from any Rotary Club member or can be bought at a raffle ticket sales table at Delaware North stores in the village.

Those who buy raffle tickets are not required to be present at the Sunset Supper to win.

A great variety of prizes will be raffled off this year, ranging from gift certificates at northern Arizona businesses, Southwestern gift items, dinners in local restaurants, air flights and much more.

GC Star Party

to end Saturday

GC VILLAGE — The 11th annual Grand Canyon Star Party kicks off Saturday and will run until June 23 at the Yavapai Observation Station on the South Rim.

Under the sponsorship of the National Park Service and the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association, amateur astronomers from across the country will be volunteering their expertise for the event. Free star programs will be available nightly and telescopes will also be set up to view planets, star clusters, galaxies and nebulae.

Grand Canyon has been called one of the best spots in the United States for night sky observing. Participants can expect spectacular views of the universe, if the weather cooperates.

Star slide programs begin at 8 p.m. outside Yavapai Observation Station with question-and-answer sessions following.

Volunteer astronomers will have their telescopes available throughout the evening for the public to view the night sky. Telescopes will be found all around the Yavapai Observation Station, its parking lot and in an observing area southwest of the lower portion of the parking lot.

In addition to night viewing, some volunteer astronomers will set up their telescopes during the day to provide visitors with up-close views of Grand Canyon features, as well as safe observation of the sun. Daytime activities will begin daily at mid-afternoon.

Visitors are encouraged to utilize the free shuttle service.
