Streit fills void<br>on school board

GC VILLAGE — Grand Canyon Village resident Jon Streit was sworn in as the newest member of the Grand Canyon School Board Thursday.

Coconino County superintendent of schools Cecilia Owen did the swearing-in at Streit’s office, where he works as executive director of operations for Grand Canyon National Park Lodges.

Grand Canyon Village resident Jon Streit is sworn in Thursday by Cecilia Owen, Coconino County superintendent of schools, for the post of Grand Canyon School Board member. Streit fills the seat vacated by Jim Boyd.

"He has a strong background ... and has extensive experience in overall management," Owen said. "He’s responsible for developing a yearly operational budget and helped create and supervise an employee assistance program. He has various employee facets to his job."

Streit’s past jobs include director of human resources at GCNPL and director of lodging for the concessioner at Yosemite National Park. A Cal State-Northridge graduate, Streit is also currently a member of the Grand Canyon Music Festival board.

Streit, whose wife has been a substitute teacher at the school, will serve out the remainder of Jim Boyd’s term, which runs until November 2002. Boyd left the school board in September due to the relocation of his job to Harpers Ferry, Va.

"I think it’s important to be involved, not just because of my own children’s educations, but for all children," said Streit, who has three children attending Grand Canyon School.

With the appointment basically being for 12 months, Streit said he will use that time on the board to determine if he wants to pursue the seat in the next election.

"It will give me time to see what it’s all about and if I want to run again," Streit said. "I’ll give it a shot."

Streit joins the four current school board members — Chuck Wahler, Tom Pittenger, Nicky Lindig and Bess Foster. He joins Foster as the second non-National Park Service representative on the board.

Streit said it’s the perfect time to join the school board.

"They’re at the point where a lot of the big issues have been resolved," Streit said. "I think I’m coming in at a good time when it will be business as usual."

Streit's wife will no longer be able to be a substitute teacher at the school during his appointment for conflict of interest reasons.

Owen had two candidates for the vacant school board seat. Besides Streit, a local woman who had previous board experience originally wanted to be considered. However, Owen said she was diagnosed with a kidney ailment and had to decline consideration due to her health.

The Grand Canyon School Board meets for its regular monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday.
