WHS fund-raiser brings in $1,883.47<br>

Williams High School’s ‘Stop the Class for New York City’ fund-raiser held last week surpassed expectations by bringing in $1,883.47.

“It was incredible, close to $10 per student,” said Kristi Fredrickson, math teacher at Williams High School and student council advisor, referring to the total. “Big schools in the Valley have been raising around $3,000.”

“Combined with what was raised the week before (at the elementary/middle school), it says a lot about our students’ and our community’s willingness to help out.”

Williams Elementary/Middle School kids started collecting change after the Sept.11 terrorist attacks on America and presented $2,153.66 to the American Red Cross on Oct. 2.

WHS had two incentives for students to bring in donations during the Oct. 16-17 event. On the second day, the teachers didn’t start class until all the money was rolled and the class raising the most money was promised a pizza party.

But Fredrickson said four WHS classes won pizza for bringing in more than $300 apiece — Mike Fleishman’s Biology I class, Josh McCreedy’s junior English class, Dan Ayub’s Spanish I class and David Edgar’s senior government class.

Actually, four students in Edgar’s class organized a fund-raiser of their own for New York victims bringing in $657.32, which is over and above the Stop the Class total.

“As part of the class curriculum, students had a community service project, which finished up last Friday,” Edgar said. “Jamie Mainville, Andrea Barnes, Julia Paredes and Telaya Jones teamed up on their project.”

Edgar said the four girls held a carwash at Northern Arizona University and got donations from Flagstaff businesses to raise the funds.
