During the period of Aug. 23-28, U.S. Park Rangers at Grand Canyon National Park responded to the following incidents:

Thursday, Aug. 23

o An emergency medical call was taken at Phantom Ranch of a 62-year-old man complaining of severe hip pain, nausea and vomiting. The man was flown out and transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

Friday, Aug. 24

o Patrick A. Harrison, 23, Grand Canyon, was cited for unsafe operation of a vehicle by allowing a passenger to ride in a towed vehicle.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Hopi Point of a 71-year-old man with a history of cardiac problems complaining of rapid pulse. The man was transported initially to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic and was later flown to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o Rangers received a report from a group of hikers missing a member of their party along the Grand View Trail. Because of the preparedness of the missing person and danger to rescuers during a night-time search, the group was advised to remain at Grand View and if the missing person had not returned by morning to re-contact NPS dispatch.

o An emergency medical call was taken at the back door of Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic of a 22-year-old German woman who was shaking and vomiting. The woman and her family had completed a rim-to-river and back hike. The woman was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center for hyponatremia.

o Rangers responded to a report of a male roaming the halls of the Bright Angel Cabins knocking on doors. Upon arrival, rangers found an intoxicated Ohio couple who had gotten into a verbal altercation. Both were instructed to separate and be quiet or go to jail.

o Rangers received a report of an intoxicated male trying to box with a deer. The report was unfounded.

o Rangers received a report of a woman at Trailer Village yelling from trailer to trailer that something had happened to her sister and that help was needed. The report was unfounded.

Saturday, Aug. 25

o An emergency medical call was taken at El Tovar Hotel of a 72-year-old man with cardiac problems. The man was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o An emergency medical call was taken at the back door of Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic of an 11-year-old boy with his mother complaining of virus-like symptoms. The family elected to wait for the clinic to open.

o Daniel P. McLaughlin, 28, Yuma, was cited for careless operations following a motor-vehicle accident five miles west of Desert View.

o Larry Jack, 46, Shiprock, N.M., was arrested on a warrant out of Mesa. Rangers were originally called to investigate a report of a man lying between cars in the Rouzer-Brandt parking lot. Jack was under the influence of alcohol with a blood-alcohol content of .271 percent. A computer check revealed an outstanding warrant for driving under the influence of alcohol. Jack was transported to county jail.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Havasu Canyon between Beaver Falls and Mooney Falls of an 18-year-old woman with an ankle injury. The location was actually located less than a mile from the park boundary on the Havasupai Indian Reservation. The call was forwarded to the county, which then called NPS to request a helicopter for a short-haul evacuation. The woman was located and stabilized by NPS personnel, short-hauled to the rim and turned over to the Department of Public Safety for transport to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Horseshoe Mesa of a 22-year-old woman who fell 30 to 40 feet off Grand View Trail. The woman had been reported overdue the previous night. Although directed to wait at the trailhead and call back NPS Saturday morning if the missing hiker did not return, the group instead initiated its own search. Two members of the group hiked back to Horseshoe Mesa and found the missing woman. One man stayed with her while another hiked out. In the interim, a ranger was dispatched to the trailhead to determine the group’s status. He found one member of the party in severe distress over her friends being in the Canyon. The man who had hiked below then returned and reported the woman’s situation. NPS responded with a helicopter and a short-haul rescue was performed. The woman was transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

Sunday, Aug. 26

o Rangers responded to a report of shoplifting involving a 17-year-old girl was Canyon View Marketplace.

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of a 19-year-old (sex not reported) complaining of nausea and rapid pulse. The German citizen was treated for dehydration and anxiety.

o Rangers responded to two reports of burglaries in progress, the first at Maswik Lodge where someone was reportedly breaking into a vehicle and the second at Yavapai Lodge where someone was allegedly trying to break into a room. No subjects or evidence of break-ins were found by rangers.

o Rangers responded to a report of a party with loud cursing at Maswik Cabins. Rangers found a 24-year-old woman who stated several times she was going to throw herself into the Canyon and could not be stopped. The woman continued to walk toward the rim and was detained. She was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center for evaluation.

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of a 27-year-old woman complaining of a racing heart and pressure on her chest. Rangers found a Grand Canyon woman who had eaten brownies mixed with marijuana. The woman was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center for allergic reaction and anxiety attack.

o Rangers responded to a report of a fight in progress behind Thunderbird Lodge. The report was unfounded.

o Five search teams consisting of NPS and Coconino County search and rescue personnel were deployed on the lower Colorado River to complete the search for a missing hiker. A body was found at the confluence of the Little Colorado River and the Colorado River. The body was flown to the South Rim and transported by vehicle to Flagstaff.

o An emergency medical call was taken less than a mile down the South Kaibab Trail of a 47-year-old woman suffering from heat and dehydration problems. A Preventative Search and Rescue ranger provided water and snacks, they found shade and waited until it cooled down to walk out.

Monday, Aug. 27

o Merrill Lee Yaiva, 50, Grand Canyon, was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Flagstaff after rangers stopped him for creating a hazardous situation at Market Plaza Road and Zuni Way. Yaiva was transported to jail.

Tuesday, Aug. 28

o An emergency medical call was taken at the trail depot of a 71-year-old person (sex not reported) with a history of cardiac troubles complaining of shortness of breath and exertion. The patient was transferred to Medic 8.

o Ferdinand Tisi, 20, Winslow, was arrested and charged with speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, blood-alcohol content over .10 percent and failure to obey a lawful order. Tisi was banned from the park by a judge. Nicole Aspaas, 18, Grand Canyon, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was cited for minor consumption of alcohol and was released. Tisi was transported to county jail.

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of a 46-year-old woman with adult onset diabetes who traveled to Grand Canyon and failed to monitor her diet. The woman, was weak and dizzy, ingested oral glucose medication and orange juice. She was transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.
