Trade baby items Saturday

Bring outgrown baby items and trade them for things your kids need 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at Progressive Preschool, 711 W. Sheridan in Williams. Join other local

families in trading clothes, baby items, books and toys. There will also be fun activities for kids, door prizes, sign-ups for low-cost health insurance and free developmental screenings. Coconino County Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition is sponsoring this free event.

Seniors gearing up for Walk-A-Thon

The Bill Williams Seniors will host their 6th annual Walk-A-Thon Sept. 8 this year. All proceeds will directly benefit the Bill Williams Seniors and the Seniors Nutrition Program.

The nutrition program provides one hot meal Monday through Friday at the senior center and to those homebound seniors not able to come to the center. Last year approximately 10,800 meals were served at the senior center and 5,800. meals-on-wheels delivered to the homebound.

In 2000, the Walk-A-Thon fund-raiser netted more than $2,400. This year Bill Williams Seniors have set a goal of $3,000.

Mexican Fiesta candidates needed

The Mexican Fiesta Committee is seeking princess candidates for this year’s fiesta planned in Sept. 22.

Princess candidates must be 6 to 10 years old. Ash Fork and Seligman girls are welcome to participate.

Thrift shop announces summer hours

The Bill Williams Seniors Thrift Shop, located at the senior center (850 Grant Ave.), is open five days a week during the summer months. The shop is open from 10 a.m.-noon and 12:30 p.m.-2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesday, the shop is open from 10 a.m.-noon and 12:30-4 p.m.

The thrift shop serves as the only on-going fund-raiser the seniors have. All its proceeds benefit the Bill Williams Seniors and the Coconino County Nutrition Program, which provides hot noon meals Monday through Friday at the senior center as well as to those for homebound seniors not able to come to the center.

KRTE Radio explores local history

Every Saturday at 2:05 p.m., KRTE Radio 89.5 FM, airs a six-minute historical segment entitled "Williams, the First 100 Years," which features taped interviews of longtime local residents.

Among the local residents interviewed for the program were Kathryn Massey, grand marshal of the 2001 Fourth of July parade in Williams and a former Harvey Girl. Prominent local businessperson and former local newspaper journalist Wanda Hoffmeyer along with Bob Dean, Laura Cole and Ursala Garcia are included in a group of over two dozen citizens who share their memories of Williams' past.

The program is produced by Tom Erickson, KRTE general manager, and is underwritten by a grant from The Stockmen's Bank in Williams.

Job service changes to Thursday

In an effort to improve job search services in Williams, the Coconino County Career Center and the Employment Securities Administration will be sending representatives to the Williams library every Thursday from 1-4 p.m. Services they provide will include: Registration for job service, referrals to job openings, resume development, using the internet for job search, employer tax credits, unemployment insurance information, access education and training programs of the County Workforce Investment Act, along with youth employment and training.
