GC volleyball team<br>wins match at tourney
GC VILLAGE — The Grand Canyon High School volleyball team had a matchup with a fellow Class 1A North region member in the Phoenix Country Day School Tournament Saturday and came away with a victory.
The Lady Phantoms beat Seligman, 15-7, 15-5.
"Beating a conference team should be an uplifting experience," GCHS coach Matt Yost said. "We learned a lot of things. I put an emphasis on what we've been practicing."
Grand Canyon opened the tournament Saturday morning with a loss to Tucson Green Fields, 15-7, 15-7. The team then fell to the host school, PCDS, by a 15-11, 15-4 score. Both matches were played with rally scoring.
In the afternoon, Grand Canyon lost to Mayer, 15-5, 15-13 before beating Seligman. Those matches were playing with regular scoring.
The team played in the consolation championship against Higley and lost, 15-13, 15-10.
Yost said Samantha Stickler, Nikki Harvey, Kara Foo, Cally Foo, Illanda Bitsui, Rose Spoehr and Adrienne Keebahe had good performances in the tourney.
Grand Canyon (0-0, 1-6) lost to Mayer Friday, 15-13, 16-14 and 15-2, 15-10.
