GC soccer, volleyball teams<br>prepare for season-openers

The Grand Canyon High School soccer and volleyball teams opened practice last week ago in preparataion for the season-openers early next month.

First-year soccer coach Ken Hunter said he had as many as 18 students out during the first week, but expects more after classes begin this coming Monday. Others still need to take physical exams before joining the team.

Hunter hopes to have 25 to 30 athletes come out for the team. The Phantoms will open the season Sept. 6-7 at the Round Valley Invitational.

Volleyball players began practice last week under coach Matt Yost in preparation for the scheduled season-opener on Sept. 13 at Mayer.

Grand Canyon is coming off a Class 1A state playoff-qualifying season and will be striving to make a return to the postseason. After trips to Mayer and Phoenix Country Day School, the Lady Phantoms will make their home debut on Sept. 20 against Peach Springs Music Mountain.
