Viking boys out to put together wins in conference

“She was hitting the three’s and she drove the lane,” Rodriguez said. “In the first half, everything she did went in.”

Mulvihill led Williams with 15 points while Schimanowski added 10. The Lady Vikes were better at the free-throw line than in previous games with a 75 percent success rate.

Williams 38, Fredonia 30

After losing the Lady Lynx in the opening round of the Williams Pepsi Tournament, the Lady Vikings wanted revenge against the 1A school from up north. But things looked bad early on.

Fredonia led 19-5 after the first quarter, taking advantage of Williams mistakes and clicking on all cylinders.

“We weren’t in it, we came out flat and made mistakes,” Rodriguez said. “We missed a lot of easy shots.”

The strength of the Lady Vikings so far this season has been defense and Williams displayed that ability the rest of the game.

In the second quarter, Fredonia scored only one point and in fact, over the final three quarters, the Lynx scored just 11 points after the 19 in the first.

That defensive effort allowed the Vikes to get back into the game. By halftime, the deficit had been reduced down to five points after a 10-1 run by Williams.

Fredonia stifled the Williams effort again in the third quarter and even upped its lead to six points with just one quarter to play. With their backs to the wall, the Vikings came through with a huge fourth quarter. The team outscored Fredonia, 17-3, over those eight minutes and ended up with the 38-30 triumph.

“In the second half, the four guards played more aggressive,” Rodriguez said. “Sylvia (Aguilar) played well in the second half, she was one of the keys. Michelle Barnes played most of the fourth quarter. The young kids came up big.”

Williams came up with a lot of steals and turned those into points during the fourth quarter. Fredonia could not handle the aggressive Viking defense.

Schimanowski was the top scorer for Williams with 11 points. The rest of the points were distributed fairly evenly among the rest of the lineup. Mulvihill and Rocha each scored seven and Dee Dee Fogg had six.

Schimanowski was named to the all-tournament team.

Williams goes to 7-3 on the season and will play at Orme Jan. 11 to resume Canyon Region play. The Lady Vikings will host St. Johns on Jan. 12.
