Phantoms compete<br>in Winslow Invitational

GC VILLAGE — The Grand Canyon High School track team tuned up for this week's Class 1A State Track Meet with an appearance at the Winslow Invitational Friday.

The Phantoms tried to get over nagging injuries, battled poor weather conditions and endured a 36-school meet that lasted until after 11 p.m. Still, Coach Anne Phillips is upbeat about this week's big event.

"As long as we don't have these injuries be a deterrent and as long as we work as a team on the relays, we'll be fine," Phillips said.

For the girls, Erin Wahler cleared 4-6 in the high jump, ran the 1600 in 6:20 and just missed a personal-best in the 800 with a 2:52.

Maria Durfey sprinted the 400 in 1:15 and ran the 800 in 2:53. Cally Foo had a 30.9 in the 200, 14.31 in the 100 and went 11-10 in the long jump.

Kellee Kell had a personal-record 15.84 in the 100 and went 9-5 in the long jump. Corrine Foo had a PR in the 1600 with a 7:02. Amy Northup had a 16.9 in the 100. Sarah Monfort went 9-8 in the long jump and ran the 200 in 35.8.

Grand Canyon's 400-meter relay came in with an unofficial time of 57.6 seconds, which would be the team's best time over the past two seasons. Phillips said handoffs will need to improve for state.

Durfey, Mickelson, Cally Foo and Kara Foo made up the relay.

The girls will not compete in the 1600-meter relay at state. That relay had a 5:13 at Winslow with Wahler, Durfey, Northup and Mickelson. The Phantoms will likely enter a medley relay at state.

Callie Bowser and Mely Elias did not compete for the second straight meet because of injuries.

John Hender won the high jump by clearing 6-1, two inches shy of the school record. Hender had so much momentum going on one jump that he missed the mat.

Hender has been battling a hamstring injury and also has a knee problem. He went 18-11 in the long jump for fifth place and was then held out of other events.

Jacob Wahler had a PR in the shot put with a 25-7. Wahler threw the discus 64-0, but would've had a throw of 80 feet if that throw would have stayed in-bounds.

Brian Skeet at a PR of 12:07 in the 3200. Phillips said he ran a good strategy "picking them off one at a time." She believes he has a shot at placing at state if he gets under 12 minutes.

Chas Iacampo had 25-0 in the shot put, went 13-0 in the long jump and ran the 200 in 27.1.

The state meet begins at 5 p.m. Saturday at Mountain View High School in Mesa (near crossroads of Val Vista and Brown Road).
