Grand Canyon High School soccer and volleyball athletes were honored Thursday night at the fall sports banquet.
Grand Canyon High School soccer coach Ken Hunter presents the team’s Most Valuable Player Award to Miles Hunter Thursday night at the fall sports banquet while assistant coach Bertha Martinez looks on. Hunter broke the school record for most goals in a game and season. Scott Olsen, Janna Barth, Jesse Hunter, John Gabaldon and Joe Wilkerson also won soccer awards.
Held in the school’s multi-purpose room, which was decorated in impressive fashion by the local booster club, the banquet featured speeches by volleyball coach Matt Yost and soccer coach Ken Hunter.
Yost, who was named the Class 1A volleyball coach of the year, made comments about each varsity player while handing out four awards. The most valuable player award went to senior Cally Foo.
All-conference selections included Cally Foo and Melissa Monroe on first team and Kara Foo on second team.
Assistant coaches Sally Wahler and Jessica Olsen recognized junior-varsity players.
It was a stellar season for the Lady Phantoms. The team qualified for the state playoffs for a second straight year.
Hunter followed with soccer awards. The MVP award went to Miles Hunter, who broke the school record for goals in a season with 19.
All-conference selections for soccer have not yet been completed.
Grand Canyon Booster Club president Debra Wilkerson thanked all volunteers, including Eric Gueissaz of Cafe Tusayan for preparing the dinner.
