The Grand Canyon Middle School soccer team split a pair of games at Ash Fork Saturday as the team gears up for this week's I-40 Tournament.

The Phantoms dropped a 2-1 decision to Flagstaff Northland Prep. Ali Towers scored the Grand Canyon goal on an assist by Maria Caballero.

Yolanda Bitsui had seven saves in goal for the Phantoms.

"We were playing kind of flat in that game," Grand Canyon coach Terry Tobin said. "Cuco (Jaime) played hard. He's a good all-around player."

Grand Canyon rebounded in its second match by downing Seligman, 3-0.

Jaime scored two goals with Cruz Caballero getting the third. Lizzie Tobin, Dory Kimmerle and Casey Gibson had assists.

Jonathan Yazzie had five saves in his first game at goalkeeper.

"They looked a lot better, passing and making plays," Coach Tobin said of the team. "So we were pretty happy about it. They looked good this weekend."

Grand Canyon goes to 5-5 on the season and will play in the I-40 Tournament at Ash Fork on Saturday morning. The Phantoms enter the tourney as the defending champs.
