The Grand Canyon High School volleyball team will open the season this week with a Friday trip to Mayer and a Saturday journey to the Phoenix Country Day School Tournament.

The Lady Phantoms will be seeing their first action after beginning practice about one month ago.
The matches at Mayer are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. There will be two varsity contests and one junior-varsity match.
Grand Canyon will then head to the PCDS Tournament. Twelve schools will be participating in the tournament, being staged at three different schools in one day.
The Lady Phantoms will play its pool play matches at Bourgade Catholic. The team’s first action will begin at 8:45 a.m., against Tucson Green Fields.
The Phantoms follow at 9:30 a.m., with a match against Bourgade Catholic. The team then finishes pool play with an 11:45 a.m., match against Mayer.
In the afternoon, the championship round will be played at PCDS with the consolation round to be staged at Scottsdale Christian.
Grand Canyon’s opponents and site will be determined by its performance in pool play.
Other schools participating include PCDS, Maricopa, Seligman, Tucson Desert Christian, Scottsdale Christian, Williams, Orme and Higley.
The tournament will use rally scoring, except in the championship match.
