During the period of Sept. 3-7, U.S. Park Rangers at Grand Canyon National Park responded to the following incidents:

Tuesday, Sept. 3

o An emergency medical call was taken near South Canyon of a 54-year-old woman with current symptoms of migraines, which had resulted in hospitalization several times over the past few months. The woman, who was on a river trip, was treated and evacuated via helicopter and transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o Walter G. Traschler, 35, Spring, Texas, was cited for leaving his bus running while in the Yavapai Observation Station parking lot.

o A 20-year-old man with possible suicidal tendencies was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o Rangers responded to a noise complaint at Rouzer Hall. Occupants of the room were given verbal warnings for loud music.

o Rangers responded to several noise complaints on R Street, Rouzer Hall and Juniper Hill.

o An emergency medical call was taken at the Arizona Room of a 39-year-old man who had been choking. On arrival, the visitor was talking with no obstruction. He was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

Wednesday, Sept. 4

o Rangers took a report on the North Rim in the Thunder River use area of overdue hikers. The group was able to make it out one day late.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Phantom Ranch of a 31-year-old man suffering from hyponatremia. The man was treated and evacuated by helicopter and transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

o Rangers received a second report of an "SOS" in the sand on the beach between Granite Rapid and Hermit Rapid. The reporting party was asked to remove the "SOS" as NPS had responded to the area with a search on Sept. 1 and found no one.

Thursday, Sept. 5

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of a local resident (age, sex not reported) who was unresponsive and had a history of diabetes. The person was transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Granite Rapids of a 35-year-old man suffering from heat-related problems and unable to hike out. The man was evacuated via helicopter to the South Rim and transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

Friday, Sept. 6

o Rangers responded to a minor motor-vehicle accident at Maswik Lodge.

o Rangers responded to an intrusion alarm at a National Park Service storage facility. The alarm activation was caused by lightning.

o Rangers responded to a report of a motorist’s front wheels locking up at a South Entrance Station gate. Rangers assisted with traffic control and removal of the vehicle.

o Rangers responded to a report of smoke following a lightning strike near the East Entrance Station.

o Rangers responded to an alarm at Lookout Studio. An investigation found signs of a ringtail cat inside the studio. Several wet footprints were discovered and several small items moved.

o Rangers responded to a report of loud crashing sounds coming from a Rouzer Hall dorm room. Rangers discovered a man excitingly packing his suitcase for a trip to Las Vegas. He had dropped the suitcase several times on the floor and knocked several walls in his apartment. No criminal activity was discovered.

o Rangers responded to a report from a Brandt Hall resident concerned about her roommate not returning with her car. The roommate was due to return to work Saturday.

o Rangers responded to an alarm at Lookout Studio, again caused by a ringtail cat. Attempts to catch the cat were unsuccessful.

o Rangers responded to a report of a loud party at Coconino Apartments. Residents were given a verbal warning.

Saturday, Sept. 7

o Rangers responded to a fire alarm at the Backcountry Office. The alarm was activated by power surges associated with thunderstorms.

o Rangers responded to a report of a man attempting to gain entry to a Trailer Village residence. An investigation revealed the man was mentally disabled staying in a trailer at RV Park that was similar to the one at Trailer Village.

o Howard Batterson (age, city of residence not reported) was cited for open container of alcohol in a vehicle. The South Entrance Station made the report and the vehicle was later stopped at Yavapai Observation Station.

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of a 9-year-old girl with shortness of breath. The girl, who has a history of asthma, was transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

o Rangers responded to a report of a stranded tourist at Yavapai Observation Point. The man had been left behind by a tour group. Rangers assisted in locating the group.

o Numerous scorpion stings to visitors at Phantom Ranch were reported, including one person who was stung three times.

o Indian Garden rangers reported that approximately 45 pounds of trail litter and trash were retrieved in the day-use area and on the trail. There was a trail patrol to Plateau Point done with graffiti and litter removal. Rangers observed an increasing flash flood potential with thunderstorms dropping about four inches of rain.

o Cottonwood rangers performed repairs and assisted with getting the greywater system back online.
