GC middle-schoolers<br>split pair of games

The Grand Canyon Middle School boys basketball A team split a pair of home games Saturday, falling to Williams but downing Seligman.

In the second meeting between the two schools this season, Williams was able to pull away to win 38-24 in a mirror performance from two weeks ago. The game was close with the score knotted 8-8 after the first and 12-12 at halftime.

Then to open the third quarter, Emanuel Webb scored on a free throw and hit a basket to give the Phantoms a 15-12 lead. Williams responded with a 6-0 run in less than 60 seconds to go up by three.

Another Webb basket brought the Phantoms to within 18-17 with 3:56 left in the third. The Falcons again responded with a 6-0 run.

Webb hit another shot with 1:44 left in the quarter and Williams countered with another run of nine straight points. The Falcons led 33-19 heading into the fourth and held on for the victory.

Webb finished with 14 points for the Phantoms.

Grand Canyon defeated Seligman, 31-18, in the A team’s other game. The Phantoms went on a 12-0 run in the second quarter which turned out to be the final margin of victory.

The game was tied 5-5 after the first quarter before the Phantoms went on its big scoring streak in the second. Leading 17-5 at halftime, Grand Canyon played the Antelopes evenly in the second half.

Webb scored 16 of the team’s 30 points.

The A team (2-2) plays at Parks Saturday. Williams and Ash Fork are also scheduled to compete at Maine School.

Middle-school B team drops 2 games

The Grand Canyon Middle School B team lost close games to Seligman and Ash Fork Saturday in boys basketball action.

The middle-school Phantoms dropped a 16-15 decision to Seligman. Grand Canyon led 11-10 after three quarters but the Antelopes had the upper hand in the final minutes.

Casey Gibson and Mike Trenchard each scored six to lead the Phantoms.

Grand Canyon also lost a close one to Ash Fork, 20-17. Coach Matt Yost said Trenchard, Gibson and Mike Eck were top scorers with strong rebounding from Eck and Cruz Caballero.

The B team goes to 1-2 on the season and will play at Parks on Saturday.
