GC’s B team<br>wins top trophy

The Grand Canyon Middle School boys basketball team won the I-40 Conference B tournament Friday on its home floor.

The middle-school Phantoms defeated Ash Fork in the first round, 24-6, and then downed Seligman in the championship game, 24-23.

In the win over Ash Fork, the Phantoms took control in the first half, allowing only two points. Meanwhile, the inside game was clicking with Billie Booth scoring seven points. In all, Grand Canyon had nine players break into the scoring column.

The Phantoms would play Seligman in the championship. Seligman had beaten Parks Maine, 14-11, and Williams, 22-18, to reach the finale.

The Phantoms got out to a 7-3 lead in the first quarter, but Seligman came back to within 16-14 by the intermission. Grand Canyon tried to pull away in the second half, opening up a 22-17 lead with 4:07 left on the clock.

But Seligman would not go away. The opponent scored six unanswered points for a 23-22 lead. Grand Canyon won the game with 26 seconds remaining on a shot by Mike Trenchard.

The B team finishes the season with a 6-2 record.
