Following is a rundown of events from the Grand Canyon, Tusayan and Valle area for the period of Aug. 11-21.
Wednesday, Aug. 11
7-8 p.m. — Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at Kachina Lodge, Kachina room.
Friday, Aug. 13
7 p.m. – Movie Night, Grand Canyon Rec Center, featuring “Cold Mountain” (R) with Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. Free popcorn and lemonade provided.
7-8 p.m. — Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at Kachina Lodge, Kachina room.
8:15-9:15 p.m. — Al-Anon Family Group meeting at Thunderbird Lodge, Kiva room.
Saturday, Aug. 14
8-11 p.m. – End-of-Summer Dance at the Rec Center, featuring DJ and karaoke. Admission is $2. Refreshments will be provided.
9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. – AYSO Youth Soccer, on the sports field behind Grand Canyon School.
Monday, Aug. 16
7-8 p.m. — Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at Kachina Lodge, Kachina room.
Tuesday, Aug. 17
10 a.m. — Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at Grand Canyon Recreation Center, piano room.
Wednesday, Aug. 18
2 p.m. – Meet Board of Supervisors candidate Gary Weisskopf at Cafe Tusayan.
7-8 p.m. — Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at Kachina Lodge, Kachina room.
7 p.m. – Community Bingo Night at the Rec Center. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
Saturday, Aug. 21
7 a.m.-2 p.m. – Lions Club rummage sale, Grand Canyon School multi-purpose room.
9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. – AYSO Youth Soccer, on the sports field behind Grand Canyon School.
Ongoing events
“In the Fifth World: Portrait of the Navajo Nation,” exhibit of photographs depicting a broad spectrum of contemporary Navajo life, at Kolb Studio through Oct. 16. The exhibit, based on the book of the same title, features images from across the Navajo Reservation, taken by Kenji Kawano and Adriel Heisey. Sponsored by Grand Canyon Association.
Children’s Reading Circle, Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1:30 p.m. at Canyon View Information Plaza. Hear a ranger read an interesting story about the Grand Canyon, geared toward youngsters between 2-6. Allow time to walk or take the shuttle bus as parking at nearby Mather Point is limited.
Condor Talk: Wings Over the Canyon, at 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily in front of Lookout Studio near Bright Angel Lodge. This 30-minute talk provides an introduction to these birds and highlights the California condor reintroduction effort. Park in lots C, D or E, or take the free shuttle.
The Spirit of Sunset, each evening at the trail to Desert View Point through Aug. 21. Sunset viewing and interpretive program begins an hour before sunset.
Native American Market, Saturdays and Sundays through the summer in the lot between the Grand Hotel and McDonald’s in Tusayan, featuring traditional crafts and foods, cultural performances.
