The Williams Community Food Bank has ample storage space for donations. The food bank has a freezer, making it possible to accept frozen food donations. Other suggested donations include non-perishable foods, canned goods and cash, Padilla said.

“Anything you would enjoy eating is always welcome,” he added.

In addition to the food bank, the Senior Center also operates a thrift store. Proceeds from the thrift store benefit the Senior Nutrition Program including Meals on Wheels.

Donations for the food bank and the thrift store can be made at the Williams Senior Center from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The center is located at 850 W. Grant Ave.

Donations to the Williams Salvation Army fund are down nearly $500 from last year, said Salvation Army Coordinator Carol Steffens.

During this past December, local Salvation Army bell ringers collected $1,239.80. The bell ringers were placed at National Bank, Safeway and the Stockmen’s Bank. Last year, bell ringers collected $1,701.69, she said.

Unlike in larger metropolitan areas, Williams Salvation Army bell ringers are not paid. The bell ringers donate their time to the local cause.

“When you donate to Salvation Army in other areas, the money does not return to Williams. It is gone. All money collected here stays in Williams,” Steffens said.

Although residents see the bell ringers in December only, donations are accepted throughout the year. At this time, only two Williams residents donate throughout the year on a regular basis. Occasionally, those who have received help from the Williams Salvation Army make donations, said Steffens.

“We always welcome donations,” she said.

To donate to the Williams Salvation Army fund, stop by the Williams branch of National Bank, located on the corner of Fourth Street and Route 66 during regular business hours. Steffens, Victoria Oakman or Linda Russell will happily accept your donation.
