During the period of July 9-15, U.S. Park Rangers at Grand Canyon National Park responded to the following incidents:

Friday, July 9

• An APS power box was found damaged, apparently by a motor vehicle.

• While attempting to pull his rented motor home out of a parking lot, a park visitor backed into another visitor’s vehicle, causing about $6,000 in damage.

• Two bicycles and a motorized scooter were stolen from near Rouser Hall.

• A 37-year-old woman at Maswik Campground complained of weakness, dizziness, nausea and general illness after hiking Bright Angel Trail. She refused treatment and agreed to self-transport to Grand Canyon Clinic.

• A 55-year-old woman at Bright Angel Restaurant was transferred to Flagstaff Medical Center after complaining of nausea, dizziness and vomiting.

• A Yavapai Lodge visitor reported a stolen license plate.

• A bicycle theft was reported at Trailer Village.

• Rangers assisted in reuniting separated parties at Mather Point.

• Rangers assisted the Coconino County Sheriff’s office with a reported disturbance at a trailer park in Tusayan but were unable to locate the source.

• Terryson Ben was arrested for domestic violence and taken to the Coconino County detention facility. In the same incident, Davis Labahe was cited for minor consumption of alcohol and providing false information to law enforcement officers. Irlene Jose was cited for providing alcohol to a minor.

Saturday, July 10

• Tim Uqualla of Supai, Ariz., was cited for disorderly conduct after allegedly making threatening gestures to park visitors at Maswik Lodge.

• A Fred Harvey bus driver ran into a car stopped at the stop sign at Yavapai Lodge and was cited for failure to maintain control of the bus.

• A 27-year-old man was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center for extensive bleeding from varicose vein injury.

• A Trailer Village resident reported that a blue and silver mountain bike worth $350 was stolen on July 8.

Sunday, July 11

• Based on a report received by park dispatch, rangers attempted to locate two individuals who had left suicide notes with friends and were coming to Grand Canyon to kill themselves. The subjects were located on South Kaibab Trail. They were discovered to be in possession of marijuana and a stolen vehicle.

• There were numerous reports of exhausted hikers along the Bright Angel Trail at 3-Mile Resthouse, 1.5-Mile Resthouse and bottom of Devil’s Corkscrew. Rangers and medical personnel provided assistance to hikers requesting it. All of the hikers were able to make it to their destinations on their own.

• A 49-year-old man reported having difficulty on the Bright Angel Trail at 2-Mile Corner. A paramedic was sent down the trail to contact and evaluate the hiker, but prior to his arrival, other visitors reported a female having an altered level of consciousness. The NPS helicopter responded to 1.5-Mile House and additional personnel responded to the male patient who was carried to the 1.5-Mile helispot and flown to the South Rim and transferred to ambulance for transport to Flagstaff Medical Center.

Monday, July 12

• Virginia Lee of Grand Canyon was cited for disorderly conduct and being under the influence of alcohol after a disturbance was reported at Rouser Hall.

• A 52-year-old visitor fell backwards about 10 feet off the rim of the Canyon, into some rocks and shrubs. The visitor suffered a head injury and possible chest injury and was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

• A 21-month-old boy at Yavapai Lodge was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center after a complaint of labored breathing associated with asthma.

• A 42-year-old woman was evacuated from the Canyon after suffering a 3-inch laceration to her forehead from being tossed from a raft in Lava Rapid. The patient had significant bleeding from the deep cut.

• Four overdue hikers were reported in the South Canyon area after they failed to return to the North Rim the previous evening as expected. The incident was resolved during the investigation phase. The hikers apparently had vehicle trouble once they cleared the drainage.

Tuesday, July 13

• Rangers issued one verbal warning and one citation for speeding

• An abandoned vehicle was tagged.

• A driver was issued a verbal warning for unsafe vehicle operation.

• There was one medevac from Phantom Ranch, one from Indian Garden and one from River Mile 178.

Wednesday, July 14

• A large amount of rainfall with hail caused local flash-flooding on the South Rim and at Phantom Ranch. The storm led to blocked roads, stranded hikers and traffic control issues.

• A man was transported to Grand Canyon Clinic after complaining of difficulty breathing, dizziness and finally, hyperventilation.

• A woman slipped on the wet floor of the train and reported pain in her ribs. She was transported to Grand Canyon Clinic, then to Flagstaff Medical Center.

• Two weather-related motor vehicle accidents were reported.

• A group of patrons at Bright Angel Bar wanted to talk to a ranger after the bartender cut off service. After speaking with a ranger, the patrons left without incident.

• After exchanging intimidating looks while drinking at Maswik Lounge, Garrett R. Nelson and Norman Thinn stepped outside to fight. During the struggle, Thinn hit a stop sign, injuring his leg. Both men were cited for disorderly conduct and fighting. Also, during the course of the investigation, rangers discovered that Nelson had an arrest warrant from the Gallup PD so they returned to his Victor Hall residence and assisted him to the Coconino County jail.

• PSAR rangers assisted a 19-year-old woman who was attempting to hike on the Bright Angel Trail with no food and insufficient water. She was helped to the rim, examined by a paramedic and transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

• An unidentified individual was seen being swept away by flood waters in the Village area. The person was able to self-extricate and walk away.

• Flooding on the Bright Angel Trail caused damage to several portions of the trail and it was closed until further notice.

Thursday, July 15

• Graffiti was found in the Mather Campground rest room.

• A downed tree was removed from a residential trail.

• A false alarm sounded at Kaibab Learning Center.

• A driver was given a verbal warning for speeding.

• A 21-year-old man was transported by Guardian Ambulance after complaining of a kidney stone.

• A mandatory appearance citation was issued to Tory Kinnard for receiving alcohol without payment.

• A 51-year-old man with possible hyponatremia was reported at Cottonwood.
