The boys 4 X 200 team of Steven Vessey, Chris Streit, Jeff Towers and David Robinson placed third with a time of 1:49.0, which was also run for the first time, setting a school record.
At the first meet for Grand Canyon, only the boys competed, but with the cancellation of softball season, the girls were able to pick up more participants and field a team. Between the two, there are 18 members.
According to coach Leah McGinnis, the school generally makes a strong showing, especially considering that it must travel with other 1-A schools like Williams and Ash Fork to larger meets that have track facilities.
“We go to all the big meets and compete with 3-A and 4-A schools,” McGinnis said.
Track differs from other school sports in that competition plays out on both team and individual levels. McGinnis said that in addition to collective goals, individuals have also developed personal goals like setting personal records and breaking school records.
Also, unlike teams in other school sports, the whole track team will culminate the season at state competition in May.
The team’s next meet is at Bourgade on Saturday, March 20
