During the period of March 15-21, U.S. Park Rangers at Grand Canyon National Park responded to the following incidents:

Monday, March 15

• Approximately $390 worth of jewelry was reported stolen from the Bright Angel Gift Shop. Investigation was continuing.

• A New Jersey man was cited for operating his rental motorcycle at 68 mph in a 45 mph zone.

• A Trailer Village resident was given a verbal warning for having his dogs off leashes and out of their enclosed yard space. The resident promised to make necessary repairs to fix the situation that allowed the dogs to apparently escape from their enclosed yard space.

• Rangers investigated a report of 911 call hang-ups from Trailer Village but were unable to locate the suspects.

• A Texas man struck a deer at slow speed, pinning it underneath his vehicle. The animal was able to self-extricate when the driver slowly reversed his vehicle.

• Rangers assisted the Coconino County Deputy with a reckless driver heading towards Tusayan. The vehicle was stopped in Tusayan and the elderly man who was driving was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center.

Tuesday, March 16

• Don M. Kerley of Grey Mountain was arrested following a traffic stop for speeding near Pipe Creek Overlook after rangers discovered he was driving on a suspended license and had three arrest warrants from Coconino County. He was also cited for the speeding before being transported to the county jail

• Rodney McSherry, 57, of Grand Canyon, was cited for disorderly conduct after he allegedly made threatening statements to Xanterra fire and safety officers. He also reportedly had a breath alcohol count of .173. The incident occurred while the subject, a Xanterra warehouse employee, was home on his lunch hour. Rangers re-contacted McSherry later that day for continued problems.

• Rangers reunited an elderly Canadian woman with her husband after the two became separated.

• A patient with a leg laceration was evacuated from Phantom Ranch at about 8:30 a.m. and transported to Grand Canyon Clinic.

• Six minor medicals were reported at Phantom Ranch in the afternoon.

Wednesday, March 17

• Terrance Yazzie, 26, of Grand Canyon was arrested after allegedly assaulting a school employee who attempted to stop him from stealing school property. Yazzie was transported to Coconino County Detention Center pending an initial appearance.

Thursday, March 18

• A truck hauling heavy equipment with a boom raised struck a powerline at the South Entrance and Center road intersection. Rangers and maintenance were occupied for a few hours controlling traffic and repairing the damage. The truck driver was cited for oversized load.

• Beau Brown of Grand Canyon was arrested for assault.

• A woman experienced a fainting episode at the Desert View bookstore, falling and hitting her head. She refused transport to a medical facility.

Friday, March 19

• A 65-year-old woman tripped and fell at Desert View, suffering severe facial trauma. She was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

• A 49-year-old man at Yavapai Lodge experienced extreme dizziness and nausea. He refused ambulance transport and was driven to Grand Canyon clinic by a travel companion.

• Numerous elk and deer jams blocked traffic throughout the park.

• A man from Hamburg, Germany, was cited for speeding.

• Mary Maslankowski of Mount Pleasant, S.C., was cited for speeding and for driving with a suspended license.

• Rangers conducted traffic control at South Entrance and Center roads and repairs after the previous day’s power line incident continued.

• A visitor hit a deer while driving on South Entrance Road.

• A 17-year-old female at El Tovar experienced a fainting episode but refused treatment.

• A Grand Canyon woman was warned for disorderly conduct at Rouser Hall.

• Phantom Ranch rangers tended to three minor medical cases, and did some maintenance work on screens and swamp coolers. The campground was full.

Saturday, March 20

• A minor accident was reported at Bright Angel lodge after one visitor backed his car into another visitor’s vehicle. The incident caused about $500 in damage but no injuries.

• A visitor came to the back door of the clinic to request ice.

• A 59-year-old Watsonville, Calif., man was cited for driving 57 mph in a 35 mph zone.

• A vehicle belonging to National Car Rental of Flagstaff was found to have no current registration.

• A Blue Gap, Ariz., woman was cited for illegally parking. PV Holding of Virginia Beach, Va., was also cited for illegal parking.

• A Battle Creek, Mich., man was cited after driving his coach bus into the Mather Point parking lot.

• A 24-year-old woman at Yavapai West was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center after complaining of a tooth abscess contributing to overall general illness.

• While conducting an area patrol of Bright Angel Lodge, the NPS pipeline crew charged the water line to the Mile and a Half House. The line apparently suffered several breaks over the winter, causing it to spout numerous 20-30 foot geysers.

• A man visiting from Salte Sainte Marie, Mich., backed into a 1994 Hyundai owned by a Davis, Calif., woman.

• A Colter Hall resident reported that about $300 was stolen from her purse while she was cleaning rooms in Maswik Lodge.

• A woman from Brownlee, United Kingdom, and a man from Canada were cited for speeding.

• A Flagstaff woman was cited for illegal parking at South Kaibab Trailhead.

• A 73-year-old man with an extensive cardiac history was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center after complaining of a heart flutter. The man was taken by ambulance to Valle and transported by helicopter to the hospital.

• Rangers were called to a room at the Yavapai Lodge after a guest reported that an unwanted animal had taken up residence in the bathroom. The guests were moved to another room before rangers arrived, and an investigation yielded no animal, and the animal was never identified.

• Three minor medical cases were treated at Phantom Ranch. The campground was full.

Sunday, March 21

• Rangers responded to Trailer Village for a report that a 13-year-old boy was suffering grand mal seizures. They witnessed two seizures, after which the patient would not wake up. He was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

• Rangers were unable to locate a 23-year-old man who allegedly called his girlfriend in Flagstaff from the Canyon rim and said he was going to jump off the rim and kill himself.

• A 76-year-old woman complaining of abdominal and chest pain was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

• A Boulder, Colo., woman was cited for speeding on Highway 64 through the park.

• Charles E. Bartlett III, of Grand Canyon, was arrested for DUI.

• A 46-year-old man at House Rock rapid (river mile 17) was evacuated to the South Rim for a complaint of heat-related illness with nausea and vomiting after hiking down Rider Canyon the previous day. The patient attempted to self-correct but was unsuccessful
