During the period of April 23-28, U.S. Park Rangers at Grand Canyon National Park responded to the following incidents:

Friday, April 23

• Graffiti was found on utility boxes near Canyon View Information Plaza.

• A nine-year-old boy on a shuttle bus was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center after complaining of vomiting and not feeling well.

• Rangers provided civil standby for Delaware North while the company removed unauthorized occupants from one of its apartments.

• While investigating a report of shots fired in the Coconino Apartments area, occupants of one apartment were contacted for a domestic disturbance. During that encounter, rangers heard shots in the Pinion Park area. Coconino Street and Pinyon Park were closed to traffic for about an hour and a half while rangers investigated but they couldn’t locate the source.

• While rangers investigated the report of shots at Coconino Apartments, a resident reported an injury to her jaw, stemming from an earlier altercation with a coworker. She was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center.

• Rangers assisted a 12-year-old with asthma-type symptoms 700 feet up the Bright Angel Trail to the Rim. The patient was transported by family to the Grand Canyon Clinic.

Saturday, April 24

• A juvenile was arrested for DUI and another was charged with being under the influence of alcohol.

• An Ogden, Utah, man was cited for driving 55 mph in a 35 mph zone.

• Two drivers were cited for failing to obey traffic control devices after they parked in front of “no parking” signs.

Sunday, April 25

• Rangers cited one driver for failing to stop at a stop sign and failure to use due care following a two-vehicle accident at South Entrance and Desert View Drive. There were no injuries.

• A man who walked into a tree refused medical care for head lacerations.

• An intoxicated Victor Hall resident was confined to his room after he was contacted for slapping the day dorm proctor in the chest.

• A driver from Long Beach, Calif., was cited for driving 69 mph in a 45 mph zone.

• A resident reported finding a large number of gouges, possibly key marks, in the hood of her vehicle while it was parked in the Market Plaza parking lot.

• A 58-year-old man had a fainting episode while hiking in the Phantom Ranch area. After assessment and treatment by rangers, the patient was evacuated by helicopter to the South Rim and transported by ambulance to Flagstaff Medical Center.

Monday, April 26

• About eight RVs were relocated from the bypass lot and Maswik Transportation Center. The SOBE bus at Delaware North was unoccupied as of midnight.

• Several dogs were reported running loose at Trailer Village. The owner was contacted and told to keep his dogs restrained in the future.

• A man from Holidaysburg, Pa., was cited for driving 68 mph in a 45 mph zone.

• Jason A. Shoemaker of Grand Canyon was cited for disorderly conduct and fighting after he split another man’s lip with a whiskey bottle during an altercation. The victim was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center for emergency surgery.

• Papillon Helicopters reported an overturned raft in Crystal Rapids. A NPS helicopter responded and rescuers spoke by radio with a commercial river company in the area. It was confirmed that no one was injured and no further assistance was needed.

Tuesday, April 27

• Guests at Yavapai East reported the possible theft of a green bag containing two jackets, a pair of shoes, cosmetics and medication.

• A woman received a verbal warning for disorderly conduct after a verbal dispute in the Xanterra Human Resources office.

• A woman took a ground level fall and injured her left wrist. She refused further treatment.

• A juvenile was contacted off school grounds for truancy.

• A 27-year-old pregnant woman was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center following a fainting episode at El Tovar.

• While responding to the medical case, rangers noted that the El Tover circle was completely filled with cars obstructing traffic flow. They cited three vehicles for parking violations.

• Loren E. Sandoval was arrested on an outstanding warrant from Coconino County. He was transported to the county jail in Flagstaff.

• A Grand Canyon woman was cited for illegally parking on the east end of Coulter Hall.

• A visitor who identified himself as a member of the Royal Navy was cited for violating the conditions of his camping permit.

Wednesday, April 28

• Three 13-year-olds from the Phoenix County Day School were reunited with their group after being separated for about an hour.

• A 41-year-old woman complaining of a headache and nausea was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

• Three coach bus drivers were given verbal warnings for idling in front of Yavapai Lodge.

• Jeremy Andrews of Trailer Village was arrested for DUI (breath alcohol count over .08), driving on a revoked license and driving with an open container in the vehicle. He also had four arrest warrants from the U.S. Magistrates Court. He was tranpsorted to the county jail.

• A 39-year-old woman from Tuscon, Ariz., was evacuated by helicopter from Phantom Ranch and taken by ambulance to Grand Canyon Clinic for a knee injury sustained on a river trip. She had twisted her knee two days before arriving at Phantom Ranch, and was uanble to bear weight for any distance.

• A 61-year-old German visitor was evacuated from Indian Garden and taken to Grand Canyon Clinic after being treated overnight by rangers. The patient had collapsed on the Bright Angel Trail below the Three-Mile House at about 5:30 p.m. the previous day. Though medics and a litter could be inserted before nightfall, the patient couldn’t be evacuated by helicopter until the next morning.

• A private river trip flipped a boat in Crystal Rapid and got stuck on the boulder field below the rapid. River sub-district rangers removed the boat and returned it to the boaters, who planned to continue downstream. High winds precluded evacuation of the rangers to the South Rim.
