First league game shutout for Phantoms<br>
The middle school Phantoms battle Williams last Saturday.
“Northland Prep played very well,” he said. “Our team was able to limit their chances.”
The Phantoms were ahead 2-0 at the half, on the strength of a successful penalty kick by Miles Hunter at the 22nd minute and corner kick by Ryan Eck, assisted by Kevin Beckerleg, at the 37th minute.
Northland Prep rallied in the second half, but the Phantoms rose to the challenge and held them scoreless. Justin Kremer scored the third goal, assisted by Jeff Towers,
“In the second half, our team started to play defensively, the way they can play. They had struggled defensively in the Round Valley Tournament but we’ve been getting better.”
Last year’s strong defense helped propel the team to the state finals. Coach Hunter said their performance this year is matching that, with promising things happening on offense.
“We’re back to playing the defense we played last year, and scoring a lot more goals,” he said. “Hopefully that’s a sign of things to come.”
The Phantoms were scheduled to play Ash Fork in an away game last Saturday, but storms rolled in 16 minutes into the match and the game was cut short due to poor field conditions.
Because the game is a conference game, it will have to be made up, said Hunter.
