Letter to the Editor

Making an appeal to the community

Editor's note: This is an open letter to Tusayan, Grand Canyon Village,, Valle and surrounding area.

My dear friends,

I am scheduled for an open heart surgery, tomorrow, Aug. 19th in Tucson, University Medical Center. I know some of you have heard of my illness.

My concern is about the fifth Annual Grand Canyon South Rim Ceremonial Gathering, and Sonny's Memorial Hoop Dance Contest.

Please assist my children host this event for Tusayan and the Grand Canyon region. I ran this event almost single handedly, but now my children really need help.

We have added the Fry Bread Contest. We need people to coordinate this event. The addition of this event would bring fame to this region, even national fame, through the Food Network (foodnetwork.com).

I thank you, people of Tusayan Mike Finney and Tom Mace Sr., who brought me into Tusayan; the Thurstons for allowing art shows; Trish Sample getting my people to bring Indian dances; Ron Williams getting my family in business; Ann Wren for allowing my people to share their culture with her customers; Mike Freeman with Xanterra; Greg Bryan with his encouragements; and everyone, even Joe Alston his presence at the Art Shows, just that presence is creating a bond with our people, the condors rejuvenating our spiritual connection with our Mother Earth.

We are citizens of Mother Earth.

I miss all of you, my friends. My people really need your help.
