Vacation Bible school next week

The Grand Canyon Community Church is sponsoring Vacation Bible School for all residents ages 12 and under. This year's theme is "Kingdom of the Son: A Prayer Safari."

Each day there will be Bible stories, songs, age-level crafts, and games.

This summer's Intern Staff, serving with "A Christian Ministry in the National Parks," will provide leadership next Monday through Friday, Aug. 1-5, from 10 a.m. until noon at the GC Recreation Center, 2 Mohave St.

For more information, or to register a child, call the Church Office at 638-2340. Leave a message if no one is in and Pastor Ed Purkey will call you back.

Gary Ladd to speak at Shrine

On Wednesday, Aug. 24, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Shrine of the Ages, renowned photographer of the Southwest Gary Ladd will be on hand to discuss Lake Powell and photography. Ladd's published work includes "Grand Canyon: Time Below the Rim," "Along the Rim: A Guide to Grand Canyon's South Rim from Hermits Rest to Desert View" (published by the Grand Canyon Association) and "Gary Ladd's Canyon Light." Ladd will sign copies of his various books, all of which will be available for purchase at the lecture.

The lecture is sponsored by the Grand Canyon Association as part of the Canyon Country Community Lecture Series and is free and open to the public. For more information, call GCA at 800-858-2808, ext. 7026, or visit www.grandcanyon.org.

Students return to school Aug. 18

Students will be returning to school on Thursday, Aug. 18. As of that day, school officials ask that there be no unauthorized visitors on school grounds. This includes using the campus as a shortcut to residences or the Recreation Center.

All visitors and volunteers must sign in with Peggy or Cheryl at the school office and pick up a Visitor's Pass every time they come to school. The school administration thanks community members for their help in keeping the school safe for the students.

Paramedics seek info in phones

In case of emergency Paramedics will turn to a victim's cell phone for clues to that person's identity. You can make their job much easier with a simple idea that they are trying to get everyone to adopt: ICE.

ICE stands for In Case of Emergency. If you add an entry in the contacts list in your cell phone under ICE, with the name and phone number of the person that the emergency services should call on your behalf, you can save them a lot of time and have your loved ones contacted quickly. It only takes a few moments of your time to do.

Orientation set for substitutes

There will be an orientation for future substitute teachers on Thursday, Aug. 4, with a tour of the campus and a brief workshop. Summer school will be in session at that time, giving prospective substitutes some insight into how the school operates.

To be certified as a substitute teacher, applicants must complete an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card and an Application for Certification, and provide official transcripts.

Candidates with a bachelor's degree can be certified for six years. Candidates with a high school diploma can be provided "Emergency Certification" for one year with the superintendent's endorsement. To renew an emergency certificate, two semester hours of continuing education or 30 hours of school-provided in-service training are required. All Grand Canyon subs must also be approved by our Governing Board to work in our school.

Forms are available in the school and district office. Staff in those offices will be happy to answer any questions and provide assistance in the certification process. For information, call the school office at 638-2461, ext. 400.
