Park, Forest conducting burns

Park Service and Forest Service fire managers have been busy with prescribed burns over the past week.

On Sunday, Park Service officials ignited the Long Jim I and II prescribed fires. These were expected to treat up to 1,600 acres southeast of Grand Canyon village, east of Entrance Road, and south of Desert View Drive.

These fires will help to protect the South Rim developed area by reducing fuels within the treatment area, which is primarily ponderosa pine.

Smoke impacts may occur in Grand Canyon, Tusayan, and other communities adjacent to the park. Smoke impacts may also occur along the river at night and in the early morning hours, since smoke settles when the air temperature cools and lifts during daylight hours. Minor traffic delays were reported on Desert View Drive.

Fire managers had planned to treat the Topeka burn unit, an area of 2,123 acres southwest of the Village area but that project was postponed. For more information, call 638-7944.

Last Friday, fire managers on the Kaibab National Forest began treatment on a 700-acre block surrounding Ten-X Campground. While they didn't plan to burn the entire 700 acres, they hope to treat about 200 acres in and directly surrounding the campground. Because the campground is closed for the season, fire managers would like to complete as much of the project as possible while campers are not using the area.
