Road to North Rim closed for winter

The Arizona Department of Transportation closed Highway 67 to the North Rim for the season last week, due to snow and ice accumulation.

State Route 67 closes each winter due to anticipated heavy snow fall. The highway usually reopens around mid-May, in time for the opening of services on the North Rim. Highway 89A is open year-round.

The North Rim campground is still open for winter camping and is accessible via inner canyon trails from the South Rim or by cross-country skiing and snowshoeing a 45 mile trip from Jacob Lake. A backcountry permit is required to camp at the North Rim during the winter. For information, contact the Backcountry Information Center at 638-7875, Monday-Friday, between 1-5 p.m. Permits are also available at Pipe Spring National Monument in Fredonia, Ariz., or the Bureau of Land Management District Office in St. George, Utah; however, you must obtain your permit in person and several days in advance at these locations.
