Lady Phantoms earn win over Northland Prep Spartan girls
The Lady Phantoms beat Northland Prep, 43-32, at the last varsity home game of the season.
The first half belonged to neither team, as they traded baskets, ending the first quarter 10-11 in the Canyon's favor and Northland Prep emerging with a sliver of a lead, 21-20, at the half.
In the second half, Grand Canyon turned up the heat, racking up 22 points while Northland Prep could only muster 10.
"They were close at the half but in the third quarter they took the lead and never looked back," said Head Coach Andrew Aldaz.
High scorers were Lindsay Haswood with 18, Jackie Wren with 14, Kecia Torivio with 7 and Melissa Skeet with 4.
That it was senior night draws attention to the fact that six experienced players won't return next year.
"I coached most of them since they were freshmen," Aldaz said.
Aldaz said the core of next year's team will be Lizzy Tobin, Jessie Wren and Megan Timeche.
"They are getting a lot of varsity playing time," he said.
