Lady Phantoms hit their stride in weekend games
After some grim games, the high school Lady Phantoms were clearly enjoying the game of basketball last weekend, winning big against Beaver Dam and Tri-City and holding their own for a four-point loss to Seligman.
"They're playing with a lot more confidence and they're playing better as a team," said Head Coach Andrew Aldaz.
In Saturday's game against Seligman, the Lady Phantoms shot to an early lead, which they held until the third quarter. In the fourth, however, the Lopes racked up 22 points to Grand Canyon's 7, getting past a coordinated Canyon defense by sinking four three -pointers.
"We just didn't take care of the ball in the second half," said Aldaz. "And in the fourth quarter they came out firing."
He said they also dropped too many free throws which, in the close game, would have made all the difference.
Jackie Wren was top scorer with 14. Lindsay Haswood scored 9, Kecia Torivio had 7 and Kayla Booth had 2.
In Friday's home games, the Canyon beat Tri-City 49-11, even without three of its starters. High scorer was Jackie Wren with 16, followed by Lindsay Haswood with 12 and Megan Timeche with 10. Kecia Torivio added 6 and Ashanna Jones, Kayla Booth and Amanda Leyer each chipped in 2.
Beaver Dam fell 43-18 with high scorer Lindsay Haswood contributing 13, Jackie Wren had 11, Kayla Booth with 10, Kecia Torivio with 8 and Megan Timeche with 2.
