The Lady Phantoms faced off against Northland Prep last Saturday, winning the best two out of three in JV and losing a close match with the varsity squad.
The final scores in the JV match were 23-25, 27-25 and 15-7. In the varsity match, scores were 17-25, 14-25 and 19-25.
Of the varsity match, Head Coach Jim Baum said these scores were similar to the Canyon-NPA matchup at the start of the season.
"Either there was no improvement on either side or we both improved at the same rate," he said. "They were good games, very steady."
Standout player was Jessica Shields, who excelled in a new position and also emerged as high scorer.
"I made a little changeup and moved Jessica to outside hitter," Baum said. "She did really well and had more kills than I anticipated. She flowed really well into that position."
The Lady Phantoms travel to Seligman this Friday for the regionals, facing Joseph City at noon. The stakes are high the tournament is single-elimination but it will also take one win to move the team forward to state.
The team is working on countering Joe City's serving strength, Baum said.
"We're working heavily on digging balls out," he said. "Our hits are real good and our sets are good. But to have a good set, you need a good pass and that's what we're working on."
