Varsity basketball starts with Ash Fork scrimmage tomorrow
The boys and girls basketball team will be scrimmaging Ash Fork at home tomorrow.
The Lady Phantoms start at 5:30 p.m. and the boys follow at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym.
Coming off two consecutive trips to the 1A final four at Glendale arena, the boys are looking to win two more games this season for that elusive state championship.
Head coach Dan Lopez said his team has a good chance of that happening as long as they avoid injuries and academic eligibility problems.
"We are not as deep as I would like to be but we have a solid core of players - as long as we get the job done in the classroom," he said. "Our team policy is that if you go below 70 percent once during the season you will have time to get back to 70 percent or better. The second time, you will have to turn in your uniform. It doesn't make any sense to give players practice time if they are not going to play on the weekend."
This year's Phantoms are looking for good seasons from 6-foot, 5-inch junior Bille Booth, guard Emanuel Webb, Paul Garza, Danny Trenchard and Lydell Talas.
"We have a tough opening schedule but it helps us in the long run," Lopez said. "We are going to be fun to watch."
