The Lady Phantoms volleyball team went to the Joe City tournament with a mission to whup Seligman. And they did, winning the best two out of three with 25-11 and 25-17.
"Their goal was to beat Seligman," said Head Coach Jim Baum. "They have always been beat by them and out of this whole tournament, that's what they wanted to do. And they accomplished that."
The team also pulled down a win in another game though they didn't win the match. Still, said Baum, in their first league outing the Lady Phantoms have already matched their win record from the whole 2005 season.
"There is some outstanding playing going on," he said.
Lindsay Haswood emerged as the tourney's MVP, turning out a phenomenal performance, said Baum, adding that Chelsea Palmer and Yolanda Bitsui carried the team in their consistent, strong serving. Meanwhile, Lizzy Tobin buoyed the team's spirits with cheers and encouragement.
"It was some great stuff," he said. "It got the girls really pumped up."
This week, they are beefing up their passing as they prepare to face Ash Fork tonight at home. Varsity games are at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. and a JV game at 5:50 p.m.
Baum encourages community members to come out and give the girls a hometown boost after two weekends on the road.
"Come out and watch," he said. "Local support is awesome."
