Two fatalities reported in Canyon
Two people died in Grand Canyon last week in separate incidents.
Matthew A. Dickeson, 29, of Las Vegas, Nev., died in a 300-foot fall from the west side of Bright Angel Point on the North Rim at about 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Rangers were summoned by the victim's brother. They short-hauled to the man, confirming that he had died of his injuries.
On Friday morning, a 52-year-old man suffered what appeared to be a cardiac fatality about two miles down the Bright Angel Trail. He was identified as Scott Smith of Lancaster, Calif.
Hikers notified a preventative search and rescue ranger of an unresponsive man on the trail.
The ranger arrived on the scene to find the victim's friend and an unrelated bystander performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The PSAR ranger assisted with CPR efforts. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) units arrived, but despite efforts to save him, the man could not be revived.
The bodies were transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office.
A family liaison officer from the NPS provided support services to the families.
The Park Service is investigating.
