6,000-acre fire on North Kaibab
As of last Sunday, more than 300 firefighters had achieved 40 percent containment of a 6,000-acre wildfire on the North Kaibab Ranger District.
The Slide Fire was ignited by lightning last Thursday at 2:30 p.m. It is about 20 miles southeast of Fredonia and 12 miles southwest of Jacob Lake, in an area of grass, brush, shrubs, pinyon and juniper. According to Forest Service officials, the fire is threatening critical mule deer winter habitat and unique cultural sites.
North Kaibab Ranger District fire managers turned control of the suppression effort to a type-two management team on Saturday.
On Thursday and Friday, there were three air tankers involved in the suppression effort along with hand crews, heavy equipment and water trucks. As of Sunday, there were five hand crews, 12 engines, six water tenders, three bulldozers and three helicopters. Some were expected to be released earlier this week as crews completed the control line and began mopping up.
