Of the approximate 1,250 employees currently staffing the Grand Canyon's Xanterra South Rim, L.L.C. lodging, dining and tourist concession company, nearly 950 turned out July 14 to participate in and support the 2007 Xanterra Property Olympics.

Events included an obstacle course, word scramble, relay race, maze, giant puzzle, and the bucket brigade, in which teams attempted to move water across an open field in a garbage can with holes.

Teams consisted of staff members and their families from various service divisions within the resort. Each team designed a unique T-shirt to enliven the spirit of the events.

"It's just a time for all of our employees to get together for free food and fun," Human Resources staff member Chris Espanol said. "At Xanterra itself we do have a lot of employees from all over the world-like Thailand, Europe, Ecuador, Taiwan and Jamaica-This is one way we try to bring the Xanterra family closer together to make friends, build teams and bring up the morale. Because we have so many workers here on visas they don't often get to get to many other places to have fun."

The Overall First Place Award went to the Suite and Beverage Team; the Second Place went to the Rooms Team; Third Place to the Human Resources Team; Turkey Award to the Retail Team; and the Best T-shirt to the Accounting Team.
