Fund-raisers set to help former resident with medical expenses

To help assist former resident Angie Simpkins with medical and living expenses, friends and colleagues have begun a fund-raising effort that will end with a pancake breakfast before the Rotary's annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 7.

From now through Easter, See's Candy will be available at the Delaware North General Store or by calling Patty Brookins at 638-7037.

Collection cans will also be out at area businesses.

The pancake breakfast will be from 7:30-10 a.m. at the Rotary Ramada. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children, for orange juice, coffee, sausage and all the pancakes you can eat.

It is being coordinated by the Grand Canyon Rotary and Lions clubs with support from local businesses. To help, call David Beckerleg at 638-2526, ext. 6390.

Simkins worked for Xanterra, as a retail manager at Maswik and Desert View gift shops, then overseeing the Tusayan Trading Post.

Her husband, Larry, worked for the National Park Service.

She was an active member of the Grand Canyon Rotary Club until she underwent surgery for a heart problem and subsequently suffered a stroke.

She is living in Tucson now as she undergoes rehabilitation.

"Angie is short in height but she's a giant in giving," said Rotary President Greg Bryan. "She's always willing to help things happen and to give to the community. We're just happy to be able to give back."
