Burns planned on North Kaibab
North Kaibab Ranger District fire managers had expected to ignite a 1,500 acre prescribed fire in the northern part of Lookout Canyon early this week.
The entrance to Lookout Canyon is about a mile south of Big Springs, at the junction of Forest Roads 226 and 429 just east of Forest Road 22. Forest Road 226 and the northern part of Lookout Canyon Trail (Forest Trail 120) will be closed during the burn. Forest Roads 22, 429 and 759 may be affected by smoke and firefighter operations.
Firefighters will ignite the burn using both aerial and ground methods. Active burning is expected to last for two to three days.
The Lookout Canyon area was mechanically thinned in 2002. Firefighters burned slash piles in the area in 2005 and 2006.
